Restricted Breeds
The Control of Dogs Regulations 1998 imposes additional restrictions in relation to the following breeds , strains or crosses of dog in Ireland .
• American Pit Bull Terrier
• Bull Mastiff
• Doberman Pinscher
• English Bull Terrier
• German Shepherd ( Alsatian)
• Japanese Akita
• Japanese Tosa
• Rhodesian Ridgeback
• Rottweiler
• Staffordshire Bull Terrier
• Ban dog
These dogs , strains or crosses of them shall have the following when in a public place :
• securely muzzled
• led on a sufficiently strong chain or leash not greater than 2m in length , by a person over the age of 16 years and who is capable of controlling it
• have a collar bearing the name and address of the owner ( latter applies to all dogs )
The above does not apply to dogs used by Gardai , Harbour Police , Airport Police , Customs and Excise Service , rescue teams , Guide Dogs for the Blind .
There can be fines of up to 1,269.74 euros for breaches of all Control of Dogs legislation .
The owners of any of the above breeds or crosses there of , have an obligation to ensure that if these dogs are in a public place they are safely and securely managed and under total control .
